Because most people lack knowledge of how to release memories of their day's activities and enter into the inner levels of consciousness, they are restless during the early stages of sleep. You control what you dream by the choices you make during your waking life.  For instance, happy people tend to have happy dreams, negative people have negative dreams, fearful people have scary dreams, friendly people have friendly dreams, and so forth.  
    Many times it is the uncharacteristic dream that captures someone's attention.  The mild-mannered, friend-to-all person who dreams of being a key player in a violent situation or the faithful spouse who dreams of infidelity, can be the beginning of giving attention to the dream world and the gifts it brings.

If you own a pet you may have noticed how many hours your dog or cat sleeps.  The saying "cat-nap" describes a human being who sleeps small amounts off and on throughout the day.  Most humans prefer to sleep for longer periods of 4-10 hours.  There is a difference between animals sleeping and humans sleeping.
    The first reason for sleeping is to give the body a rest.  This is how your cat or dog sleep, or an elephant or lemur.  They sleep on and off so they can be ready to survive - to hunt for prey or defend themselves from being another animal's dinner.

Dreams are messages originating in the inner levels of your consciousness, the part of Self we term the subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind has a duty to fulfill and a purpose to accomplish. It recreates the images created by your waking, conscious mind so you can enjoy the experiences you desire. Your subconscious mind will fulfill any conscious desire when allowed. This occurs for the growth and maturity of the whole Self. As your desires are manifested in the conditions and circumstances of your life, you have opportunities to learn about your Self and creation. When the essence of experiences are understood and made a part of Self, these understandings are stored in your subconscious mind as permanent memory.

Every dream is communication from the inner Self to the outer Self and is always a message concerning the dreamer and the dreamer’s state of consciousness.
