Why do we sleep?

If you own a pet you may have noticed how many hours your dog or cat sleeps.  The saying "cat-nap" describes a human being who sleeps small amounts off and on throughout the day.  Most humans prefer to sleep for longer periods of 4-10 hours.  There is a difference between animals sleeping and humans sleeping.
The first reason for sleeping is to give the body a rest.  This is how your cat or dog sleep, or an elephant or lemur.  They sleep on and off so they can be ready to survive - to hunt for prey or defend themselves from being another animal's dinner.
Humans add a second reason for sleeping:  to replenish, restore, and rejuevenate the mind's used resources required for the mind and body to function well.  The human body is an evolved animal form with increased brain capacity, upright stance, and juxtapositioning of the thumb and fingers.  This has enabled humans to reason, to create and to manipulate tools - like the computer you are using right now.  Humans add mental and emotional breadth to waking experience.  When your cat is hungry she expects you to feed her or she chases a mouse.  When you are hungry you get in your car, drive to your favorite restaurant, and order dinner from a menu of food prepared especially for you.  See the difference?  (For those interested in learning more about the Mind and consciousness, this process involves the major chakra system connecting mind and body.)
In the last 100 years,  a third reason for sleeping is surfacing in the lives of spiritually-minded people this is to transform the consciousness of the individual.  This reason is fulfilled when the individual makes the effort to remember, record, and interpret his or her dreams.  This site elucidates all three levels.
