Dream Theme: relationships
Dream Date: 4/19/2011
I dreamed that my grandmother had come home from shopping and wanted to rest. We must have been in my home because I walker her down the hall and when we came to the first bedroom she wanted to go in there, and I told her that was my room and she would not be comfortable there. We came to the next room and I opened the door, there were two twin beds in there and my Grandfather was laying on one of them. He was sweating and his hands were folded across his chest. He also seemed to be very cold. He had a look on his face that just broke my heart. I knew he wasn't well. I ran to the bed and lay down on him holding him and crying. He then began sobbing very loudly. We both just stayed there sobbing together and then I woke up. Well, my husband woke me up because I was crying out loud in my sleep.
My grandfather passed away in 2004 and my grandmother lives in a nursing home. She is unable to care for herself. They have never lived with me. This dream really upset me and when I woke up. I went to my living room and just sat there and cried for about half an hour. I felt as though my Grandfather was waiting for my Grandmother; that upset me because my Grandfather is in Heaven and therefore, he would not be waiting for her. There is no sadness in Heaven.

This does not appear to be a visitation dream—that is, a dream in which a deceased person like your grandfather visited you. It is true that people can visit us in our dreams, and it’s true that you stay connected to those you love, and it’s true that your prayers and your love influence those people. However, this very moving dream is about you. The people, places, and things in the dream are symbols of parts of yourself.
The dream is about how you are understanding your own inner authority. Everyone has a sense of higher authority inside themselves that they answer to. One dream symbol for this inner authority is grandparents. Your dream shows that you’ve taken care to understand and follow your inner sense of what’s right and carefully follow it, just like you would care for your grandparents. And when you don’t have a healthy sense of higher authority, when it’s weakened somehow, it causes you pain. Your relationship to a higher authority is important to you, and it’s something you want care for well. As you give attention to your inner authority, you may find that it is changing. As you mature and become more wise and responsible, your own inner authority changes. Change in dreams is shown as death. It may be that your relationship to God and your Spirit is changing, and that change would show up in your dreams as a death. And if that’s the case, it’s important to be open to the greater revelation and a greater understanding that replaces what you had before.
You can strengthen your inner authority by listening inwardly to what you know to be true. It is also knowing what your inner, spiritual urge to grow is telling you. A key from your dream that will allow you to start listening to your inner urge, is the symbol of your grandpa with his hands on his chest, crying. This is telling you the importance of heart-felt purpose and what you understanding to be real and true. To explore this, during your day, you may ask yourself questions like, “What do I understand about this experience that is universally true for everybody?” “What am I developing in myself from this physical task?” “What virtue do I really want to cultivate in myself?” “What truths am I learning about myself and about life?”
These questions will stimulate a depth in thinking that, once discovered and cultivated, will allow you to live a much more fulfilling life and keep your sense of inner authority alive and well. You will find that you experience less negativity, pain, and hurt, and that you start to have a much greater appreciation for life, an inward feeling of wholeness, and experience of greater health and better relationships.
