What do Kubla Khan,

the lock-stitch sewing machine, and

the Periodic Table of Elements have in common?

(scroll down for answer)

They were all born in the inner levels of consciousness in the dreams of their creator.

"Vision in a Dream" is the subtitle of Samuel Coleridge's Kubla Khan which reflects the source of the poet's inspiration.  Elias Howe’s nightmare of being boiled by natives with spears gave him the necessary inspiration for the lock-stitch sewing machine.  While striving to create a means to categorize the chemical elements based upon their atomic weights, Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev dreamed of the Periodic Table of Elements so precisely that upon awakening only one adjustment was necessary.•

Dream Incubating Answers to the Economy

In a study at Harvard Medical School conducted in the 1990s, students who focused on a problem before going to sleep reported dreams that addressed that problem.  One-third of those dreams actually offered a solution for the dreamer’s problem.  Researchers at the School of Metaphysics anticipate that history will repeat itself as dreamers focus on the current economic problems.

“We are calling for participants to dream incubate solutions for the economy,” said Global Lucid Dreaming (GLiDE) Project Director Barbara Condron.  The list of people who have used their dreams for invention, direction, and resolution is long.  “Throughout history men and women have turned to their dreams for answers,” Condron says.  “From Rene Descartes’ discovery of Analytical Geometry to the last movements of George Frederic Handel’s Messiah, dreams have shaped our destiny. We are expecting they will do so again.”

The school has been teaching people from all walks of life to understand and harness the power in their dreams since 1973.  Individuals have used their dreams to improve communication, write term papers, resolve old traumas, and invest in the stock market.  The process is called dream incubation and researchers at the College of Metaphysics in Missouri are prepared to receive and catalogue hundreds of dreams April 24-27th examining them for indicators.

When asked what solutions researchers are expecting, Condron says there are no preconceived notions.  “We know the power of dreams goes beyond the physical limitations of the waking consciousness.  As we learned years ago at Harvard, dreamers will come up with solutions, mostly personal, and we anticipate some in common.  Some may well be truly outstanding in global impact.”  Those wanting to participate in the experiment can register at www.dreamschool.org

If you want to talk to a dream expert about those incubated dreams, you can do so during the National Dream Hotline®.   For the 22nd year, dream experts will answer callers’ questions about the meaning of their dreams.  The number to call is 417-345-8411 beginning at 6 pm (CDT) Friday, April 24 through midnight on Sunday.

“As the economic changes continue to unravel here and abroad,” SOM President Dr. Laurel Clark said, “the affect upon our state of mind is undeniable.  Some see the economic shifts as an opportunity to transform their lives, while others feel trapped, forced into unwanted changes.  Understanding your dreams makes a difference in your perspective on life.”

Researchers say the journey from mental anxiety to emotional depression to resolution can be tracked in our night time dreams.  “There has been a 400% increase in the number of nightmares reported into dreamschool.org since last August when the U.S. government became involved in private enterprise,” Condron said.  “We are also seeing a rise in one of the most common dreams – being back in school and realizing you are not prepared for the test you are expected to take.”  That dream, she says, indicates a missed opportunity earlier in the day.

The hotline and the experiment are part of the School of Metaphysics Dream Awareness weekend occurring in 14 cities throughout the Midwest U.S.  “Dream Teams will be out and about at coffeeshops, fairs, and  businesses, answering questions and interpreting dreams,” says Damian Nordmann, the weekend coordinator from Dallas, Texas.  “A lecture on interpreting dreams will be given in each city and local artists will create murals of the most common dream symbols to increase awareness of one of the best resources we each possess.”  To find out about activity in your area, visit the school’s website at www.som.org.
